Bills are the spending most of us set up once and forget. Checking them one at a time is one of the easiest ways to free up money every month, without changing how you live.
Start with a bills list
Write down every regular bill, what it costs, and when the contract ends. Your bank statement and email inbox will find most of them.
Broadband and mobile
If you're out of contract, you're probably paying more than you need to. Check your provider's current deals, compare with others, and ask about a better price. A SIM-only deal can be much cheaper if you own your phone.
Energy
Compare your tariff against the current price cap and fixed deals. Take regular meter readings, and check your direct debit matches what you actually use.
Insurance
Car, home and pet insurance often rise at renewal. Compare quotes a few weeks before your renewal date, and don't just accept the auto-renewal price.
Subscriptions
Streaming, apps, gyms and boxes add up. Cancel what you haven't used in the past month. You can always rejoin.
What to say when you call
Be polite and specific: "I've found a better price elsewhere. Can you match it, or should I switch?" Note who you spoke to and what was agreed.
